Bed (Gap)

Bed (Gap) is a work made of plywood and galvanized steel, with LED light emanating from the gap between two galvanized steel sheets. The work imitates a bed leaning against the wall and includes all the essential elements of a bed: a pillow, a base, and legs.

The light shining through the gap draws viewers’ attention, suggesting a space behind or beneath the surface. It indicated the profound split between image and representation: the image is the mask of an object, but the object’s true essence is something behind this mask and can only be glimpsed by a gap on this mask.

In Caravaggio’s The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, Saint Thomas puts his finger into Christ’s side wound and finally believes in Christ’s resurrection. The wound is that gap on Christ’s body.
