A Yellow Boot and a Winter Sun

A Yellow Boot and a Winter Sun is a work made of hardwood and light. The main part in yellow made by maple wood resembles a boot, while the material’s heavy and bulky quality, and the way it is presented, gives it a sense of solidity. This work continues my experiment of white felt as a material, its light texture resembles the thin snow covering the ground in winter.

Landscape, especially those isolated landscapes and the evening light, has been inspiring my art practice. My recent pieces are all about winter dusks. In A Yellow Boot and a Winter Sun, the colour of the light evokes a sunset over snow, the light that is warm yet fleeting, at the boundary between day and night.

The position of the light in this piece also gives the impression that it has fallen from the wood, as if it was once fixed on the top of the log, but for some reason, slipped down to its current position. It also suggests a sense of loss.
